Plowboys Cruise Past Irion County 45-26

The Plowboy offense was too much for Irion County last Friday night.
What a difference a year makes.  In their second game last year, the Plowboys were served up as homecoming fodder for Irion County.  It was a game in which the Hornets scored two TDs in their first three offensive plays and went on to lead at halftime 34-0.  The final score was 40-0.

So one can’t really blame Irion County fans if they came into Roscoe Friday night expecting another easy victory, especially since the Plowboys were 0-1 and the Hornets were 1-0 after taking down Roby.  They also had their main offensive weapons returning from last year, Dontae Harris and Reb Sullenger.

But this year’s Plowboys are not the same as last year.  Under new coaches Jake Freeman and Greg Althof, there’s not only a new look to the team, especially on offense, but also a revived enthusiasm and better play.

Using a wide-open offense in which the run was almost an afterthought, the Plowboys amassed 39 points in the first half and coasted to victory by a final score of 45-26.  Cutter Davila completed 22 of 49 passes for 6 touchdowns along with 3 interceptions, and Shelton Toliver had a big night on the receiving end, catching 10 passes for 196 yards and 4 TDs.  Vincent Pantoja had two touchdowns and Jesus Leanos one.

Roscoe opened the scoring with a 3-yard run by Pantoja, but the Hornets came right back with a hook-and-ladder play that resulted in Harris racing 66 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. The kick for extra point was no good, however, and Roscoe kept the lead at 7-6.

The Plowboys went up 13-6 when Davila hit Pantoja for an 8-yard score, but Irion County made it 13-12 when Gomez intercepted a Davila pass and ran it back 59 yards.

Then it was all Roscoe as the Plowboys scored 20 unanswered points on touchdown passes of 65 and 12 yards from Davila to Toliver, and 10 yards to Jesus Leanos.  Irion County closed the gap to 33-20 on a 1-yard Gomez plunge, but the Plowboys responded with another Davila scoring pass to Toliver just before the half, this one for 27 yards.  The Plowboys led at halftime 39-20.

Both sides scored a TD in the third quarter, Roscoe’s on a 32-yard pass to Toliver, and both were scoreless in the fourth.

Overall, the Plowboys are showing significant progress, but there is still much room for improvement on both sides of the ball.

This Friday Roscoe goes to Miles to play the Bulldogs, who have chosen the Plowboys for their homecoming game.  Miles is 0-2 after falling to Reagan County 20-7 and Quanah 44-12.

The Plowboy JV team will host the Miles JV at Plowboy Field tomorrow evening with kickoff at 6:30pm.  Last week they defeated the Irion County JV in Mertzon 30-6.

CITY COUNCIL HOLDS TWO PUBLIC HEARINGS AT MONTHLY MEETING

At its monthly meeting in City Hall last night, the Roscoe City Council held its final public hearing on the Texas Community Development Block Grant for the new lift station on the City’s north side.  Some 90% of the $250,000+ lift station, which upgrades the sewer system for north Roscoe, is being funded by the State, while the rest, about $28,000-$29,000, will be covered by the City.  As a separate item, the Council also approved the project completion report for the lift station and other wastewater collection system improvements.

The Council also held the first of two public hearings on the City’s property tax rate increase for the coming year.  Although the tax rate changes must be called an increase by law, individual properties may either increase or decrease depending on their assessed value.  The actual tax rate for 2014 will be down slightly, from $.925784 per $100 of taxable value in 2013 to either $.802985 or $.846558 per $100 in 2014.  The percentage decrease, however, will be more than offset by the rise in property assessments.

The average taxable value of a residence homestead in 2013 was $39,331.  In 2014, the average taxable value will rise to $41,197.  Thus, with the coming year’s proposed tax rate of $.802985, the tax for the average home would be $330.81.  With a tax rate of $.846558 it would be $348.76.  Neither amount is as great as 2013’s average tax amount of $364.12.

A second public hearing on this issue will be held in City Hall on Monday, September 16, at 7:00pm.  Citizens are encouraged to attend the hearing and express their views.  For more information, call City Hall at 325-766-3871.

City Manager Cody Thompson also informed the Council that the contractors have begun work on the SCADA, the computer-controlled system that monitors and controls the water wells and water pressure.  It should be completed within the next sixty days.  Work on the reverse-osmosis water treatment plan has also been initiated, equipment is being ordered, and work on it should be done in 300 days.  The target date for the plant to be up and running is next July or August.

ANOTHER WRECK AT “DESTRUCTION JUNCTION”

There was also a one-vehicle wreck on Thursday evening at “Destruction Junction,” which is what locals call the area near the overpass east of town where US 84 and I-20 merge.

An unnamed man on a motorcycle was traveling east on US 84 and misjudged the speed at which he could take the detour onto I-20 west.  He was unable to maintain control of his motorcycle, which overturned.  He was airlifted from the scene by helicopter.

WEATHER REPORT

Hopes were raised yesterday when the weather cooled, potential rain clouds appeared, and forecasters announced a 30% chance of precipitation.  Nothing happened, however, and the Roscoe area had another week of late summer weather.

High temperatures reached the mid nineties in the latter part of the week and weekend but cooled to a high of 90°F on Monday and only 85° yesterday.  Lows ranged from the mid-seventies to the upper sixties.  Skies were clear to partly cloudy, and winds were generally from the south.

The forecast is for more of the same with highs of around ninety and lows in the upper sixties.  There is a 20% chance of rain today but none again until Monday, when there will also be a 20% chance.
