HASKELL OVERTAKES PLOWBOYS WITH SECOND HALF SURGE 42-41
Francisco Garcia (33) runs for good yardage in the first quarter. |
I was on the sidelines getting photos, and a man from the Abilene Reporter-News who was doing the same told me around the end of the first quarter, “The winner of this game may be the team that has the ball last,” and I had to agree with him. The lead went back and forth throughout the game, and the only time either team led by more than one touchdown was right before halftime when Roscoe went ahead by two, 35-21.
In the end, the only difference in scoring was the Plowboy’s final extra-point attempt that bounced off the right upright and fell just on the wrong side of the crossbar as Haskell came away with a one-point victory, 42-41.
It was a game the Plowboys could have won had it not been for three turnovers, each of them costly. The first came at the end of a long Plowboy drive to open the game. After moving all the way down the field with a good mix of passes and runs, the Plowboys thought they’d ended the drive with a touchdown when Francisco Garcia ran the ball over from the five. But a holding penalty on the play moved them back to the fifteen, and on the next play a Brayden Beal pass was intercepted by a Haskell defender who ran the ball all the way down the field for an apparent touchdown. The Indians were penalized for excessive celebration, but scored on the following play, and instead of the Plowboys being up by a touchdown, they were down by one.
The second came early in the second half. Right before halftime, the Plowboys scored on a 17-yard Beal run and went up by two touchdowns, 35-21. The Indians received the second half kickoff but were stopped and forced to punt. Once again, the Plowboys drove down the field into Haskell territory, and if they’d scored again, they would have gone ahead by three TDs, which might have been enough to put the game out of reach, but a second interception also killed that drive just like it had the opening one. The Indians then went on to score the first touchdown of the second half and were right back in the game, down only by seven, 35-28. From that point on, they seemed to have the momentum for the rest of the second half.
The third came with only two minutes left in the game. The Plowboys were down by a point, 42-41, but had driven into Haskell territory. On a fourth and seven, Beal went back to pass but was forced to scramble to avoid the pass rush. He changed directions and sprinted to his left where he saw an opening and managed to move the ball past the first-down marker, but when he was tackled, the ball was knocked loose and a Haskell defender recovered. The Indians then proceeded to make a first down and were able to run out the clock to secure the victory.
Despite the outcome, the Plowboys showed a lot of promise. They were able to move the ball consistently against a good team, and several of the players had good games. The offensive line looked generally solid, and Francisco Garcia showed with several strong runs that he will be a force this season. For the evening he had 4 TDs and a total of 231 yards rushing on 29 carries. Beal had a rough night, but he will be back. He can pass and also run, and receivers Jose Ortega, Diego Garza, Nick Limones, and freshman Junior Martinez, who scored the Plowboys’ first TD on a long pass reception, should develop into a fine receiving corps.
The defense will have to tighten up both on pass defense and against the run as the six touchdowns scored against them indicates. There were several missed and broken tackles, and they had trouble against the sweeps that Haskell relied on. But it was after all the first game of the season, and the Plowboy coaches will be working with them to make the necessary improvements.
One surprise of the evening was the play of Haskell’s Alec Roewe, who despite playing his first game ever at quarterback, had an almost flawless evening, rushing for 186 yards and 3 TDs while passing for the three others with 13 completions of 18 attempts. We’ll have to wait and see how the season plays out, but if he keeps it up, Haskell could turn out to be better than predicted.
(Note: After writing this paragraph, I see that the Abilene Reporter-News named Roewe the Big Country Player of the Week Monday for his performance against Roscoe.)
Scoring by quarters:
Haskell 14 7 7 14
Roscoe 7 28 0 6
The Plowboys can get on the winning track Friday night against Early at Homecoming. The Longhorns are 3A-Div. I, so they are a considerably larger school than Roscoe (2A-Div. II), but they fell to Bangs (3A-Div. II) Friday night 34-8. So, whatever the Plowboys lack in student population and probably size, they’ll be looking to overcome it with ability and determination.
Kickoff is at 7:30.
