Visitors Tour School, Plan Spread of Programs

Supt. Kim Alexander informs group of Roscoe's collegiate program.

Representatives from Texas A&M, Western Texas College, TEA (Texas Education Agency), Throckmorton ISD, and Office Depot were in Roscoe Monday and yesterday to tour the school facilities and learn more about Roscoe’s initiatives and innovative learning programs.

During their stay, the group visited the Early Childhood Center, Edu-Drone, and Edu-Vet and interviewed the RCISD School Board, representatives of school-affiliated businesses, Young Farm Estates, and the City government. From RCISD School Superintendent Kim Alexander, they learned more about Roscoe’s P-20 Education initiative, the school’s collaboration with WTC, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M, and its plans for the future.

There was general consensus that Roscoe’s program is a great model for other rural schools in Texas and other states, and there was discussion about the best ways for other schools to adopt Roscoe’s initiatives and adapt them to their own situations.

The U. S. Department of Education also planned to send representatives but was stopped by the U. S. government shutdown over the weekend. They now plan to attend at a later date.

PLOWBOYS NAMED TO ALL-BIG COUNTRY FOOTBALL TEAMS

Jose Ortega                                       Francisco Garcia
Four Plowboys have been recognized on the Abilene Reporter-News’ 2017 All-Big Country football teams. Jose Ortega was named to the All-Big Country Super Team as a second-team defensive back, which is quite an honor since the Super Team comprises all classes from 6A to 1A and includes over 70 area football teams. His stats line includes these remarks: “A big-time playmaker for coach Jake Freeman's Plowboys, Ortega closed the regular season with 104 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 17 pass breakups and two forced fumbles.”

Ortega, a 5’8”, 165 lb. Junior, was also named to the Reporter-News’ 2A All-Big Country first team, which includes 2A teams from both Divisions I and II, as a defensive back, as well as the second team as a receiver on offense and as the punter. His receiver stats line says: “Had 49 catches for 783 yards and 11 TDs. Rushed for 398 yards and five additional TDs,” and the punter stats line: “Punted 32 times on the year for a 38.3-yard average.”

Also on the 2A All-Big Country team is Francisco Garcia, a 5’9”, 180 lb. Senior, who made the second team as a running back. His stats line says, “Closed the regular season with 1,429 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.”

Receiving honorable mention on the 2A All-Big Country team were Brandon Lavalais, a Junior, as a receiver and Nick Limones, a Senior, as linebacker.

Congratulations to all four Plowboys for playing well enough to receive these honors, to Francisco Garcia and Nick Limones for finishing their high school football careers in style, and to Jose Ortega and Brandon Lavalais, who return next year to do the same!

GOOD DEED BY ROSCOE FARMER RECOGNIZED IN OKLAHOMA

Photo accompanying the article in the Cordell Beacon.
Roscoe farmer Landon Orman was recently in Oklahoma stripping cotton, and when he made a special trip to obtain pink wraps for rolled cotton modules to honor a woman who had died of breast cancer, he was thanked with an article in the town’s newspaper, the Cordell Beacon.

The woman’s father, Jackie Harper said, “This is a really nice tribute. We appreciate the extra effort Mr. Orman went to. It was a touching thing he did for us.” “She would have thought this was a wonderful idea,” said her mother. “She was into all things pink and had quite a collection of pink items representing the fight against breast cancer.”

Mike Mayes, RHS Class of ’54, who lives in Sherman but still comes to Roscoe occasionally, wrote to let me know that his yearling filly, “Kiddie Mayes,” recently won a bronze medal at the American Quarter Horse World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. That's Mike and wife Ola in the middle with the horse's trainers on either side. Congratulations, Mike!

WEATHER REPORT: WARMER AND WINDIER

Sunday's sandy skies.
After enduring some seriously cold weather last week, temperatures steadily rose from 12°F on Wednesday morning to highs of 50° on Thursday, 66° Friday, and 76° Saturday. The wind also picked up as the week went on with south winds of 18-29mph on Friday and Saturday. Then on Sunday the skies were red with dust as southwest winds rose to 19-44mph. There were both wind and fire advisories, and there was a gin fire in Rotan. The winds diminished somewhat on Monday, and temperatures fell to a high of 56° and a low of 32°. Yesterday, however, was much nicer with almost no breezes and a sunny afternoon high of 60°.

Nice weather is also the forecast for today with sunny skies, a light south breeze, and a high of 63°. Tomorrow will be about the same but somewhat windier, and Friday will be warmer with a high of 69° and southwest winds of around 20mph. Saturday’s high will drop to around 59° as a mild cold front moves through, but Sunday should be nice with a high of 61° and only a light breeze from the east.

Unfortunately, there is little chance of rain as the only two days above 0% are Friday and Saturday, when the chances rise to 10%. The ground is getting seriously dry, and there is a burn ban in effect for Nolan County.
