City Council Selects Swimming Pool Operator

City Manager Cody Thompson reports to the Council at yesterday's meeting.
At its monthly meeting in City Hall yesterday evening, the City Council approved Tammy San Agustin's bid to operate the City Swimming Pool this summer. It also heard City Manager Cody Thompson’s report on City works and conducted routine business.

The meeting began with a complaint from Virgil Pruitt requesting action about a neighbor whose yard is an eyesore and potential safety hazard. The Council took no direct action but referred the matter to the Police Department.

After a short discussion, the Council then unanimously agreed to approve Tammy San Agustin’s bid to operate the City Pool this summer.

City Manager Cody Thompson then reported to the Council that the City has purchased new sensors for the Reverse-Osmosis Water Treatment Plant and that everything there is running efficiently. The City has also purchased a new push mower and weed eater and has serviced the riding mowers for the upcoming season.

At the City’s request, County Commissioner Terry Willman has re-bladed the berm behind the Bandera addition before planting season begins. The berm should help alleviate the problems the development has suffered from standing water after big rains.

Oncor is about three weeks behind schedule but should be done with their upgrade of Roscoe’s electric lines by the end of the month.

The City’s Spring Clean-Up went well at its location behind the Water Treatment Plant, where there was less illegal after-hour dumping. The City also assisted with the clean-up of lots at 4th and Main and 6th and Main Streets.

Pipe is being brought into the new pipe yard in north Roscoe next to US 84 and just across the railroad tracks from the American Legion.

The Stone Tower RV Park and Cabins has hired a new manager to improve its operations.

The NCHA (National Cutting Horse Association) has contacted the City and will be promoting Buster Welch Day in Roscoe on Saturday, May 12, on its website and elsewhere.

Stripes convenience store at 1101 South Main Street.
Customers at Roscoe’s Stripes convenience store next to I-20 may not have noticed any changes, but on April 1 the store was sold to a new company called CAL’s Convenience, Inc., of Frisco. Roscoe’s Stripes is only one of the 207 stores in west Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma that CAL’s acquired from Sunoco. WEATHER REPORT: A LATE FREEZE

Skies were blue over Roscoe yesterday.
The big news concerning the weather this past week was the late freeze that hit the area Friday night and Saturday morning. After Thursday and Friday when the highs were 87° and 85° respectively, the low temperature and the strong north wind that accompanied it seemed particularly cold and out of place for the time of year. Even my old mesquite tree, which had begun to bud out, was fooled. In twelve hours, the temperature fell 55 degrees and dropped the wind chill into the low twenties. On Saturday morning the temperature was below or at freezing almost until noon.

Even so, the tomatoes and peppers in my garden survived. I had covered all but two of them, but even the uncovered ones made it, probably because the ground temperature was warm from the heat of the preceding days.

The high on Saturday was only 43° and felt even colder. But that night the wind shifted to the southwest, and by Sunday afternoon the temperature was back up to 86°. On Monday, another front moved through, and the high was only 64°, but the weather has been warming up since then. Yesterday’s high was 74°, today’s should be around 87°, and tomorrow’s a sweltering 95°! Friday and Saturday will be cooler with afternoon highs of 73° and 63° respectively.

Unfortunately, the chances for precipitation are virtually nil.
