Plowboys Bash Baird 62-14

Jayden Gonzales (5) sets to throw a pass. (Football photos by Tamara Alexander.)
The Plowboys returned to their winning ways at Plowboy Field Friday evening as they easily earned a district victory over the Baird Bears, 62-14.

The game, however, began well for Baird. After receiving the opening kickoff, they started on their own 33 and completed five passes in a row, quickly driving all the way to the Plowboy 19. But then, their quarterback fumbled while being sacked, and Nick Limones got the ball and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown. Jose Ortega kicked the extra point, and the Plowboys were up 7-0. On their next possession, Baird was stopped and punted. Starting on the Baird 46, the Plowboys rapidly drove down the field to score again when Jayden Gonzales went over from the 2. Ortega’s kick was good, and before the first quarter was half done, the score was already 14-0. Ortega intercepted a pass to end Baird’s next possession, and on the following play, Jayden Gonzales threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Junior Martinez, increasing Roscoe’s lead to 20-0, which was the score at the end of the first quarter.

Baird fared no better in the second quarter as the Plowboys again shut them out while scoring two more touchdowns. The first was a Gary Shaw run for 61 yards, and the second another Ortega interception, which he returned for 63 yards. The kick was good, and at halftime, the Plowboys were ahead 35-0.

Baird scored first in the third quarter. They surprised the Plowboys with a successful onside kick and then scored on a 48-yard pass play. The conversion attempt was no good, however, and the score remained 35-6. Roscoe then scored the next three touchdowns. The first was a 30-yard pass from Gonzales to Brandon Lavalais, the second a 22-yard pass to Martinez, and the third a 40-yard run by Gary Shaw, increasing the score to 54-6. Baird then got their second touchdown to narrow the lead to 54-14 before the Plowboys scored again on a 65-yard run by Shaw, ending the third quarter with a score of 62-14. That also turned out to be the final score since there was no scoring by either team in the fourth quarter.

Scoring by quarters:
                             1          2          3         4           T
Plowboys          20        15        27        0          62
Baird                   0          0        14        0           14

For the evening, the Plowboys racked up 493 total yards, rushing for 292 and passing for 201. Gonzales completed 10 of 18 passes for 4 TDs. Gary Shaw ran for 207 yards on 14 carries with 2 TDs, Caleb Gray had 34 on one carry, Gonzales 32 on 5 carries with 1 TD, and Limones 16 on 4 carries with a returned fumble for 1 TD. Three others had one carry each. Martinez led the receivers with 2 catches for 61 yards and 2 TDs, Lavalais 3 for 52 and 1 TD, and Shaw with 1 for 40 and 1 TD.

On defense, Ortega had 7½ tackles and 2 interceptions for 1 TD, Barret Beal 6 tackles, John Ruben Herrera 5, Garrett Bowers 5, Limones 4, Rainey 3, and others with 2½ or fewer. The Plowboys had no turnovers while Baird had 3.

Plowboys vs. Cross Plains in Cross Plains Friday

The Plowboys play their final district and regular-season game in Cross Plains on Friday. They enter the game needing to win by 12 points to land a postseason playoff berth. That may not be an easy task even though the Buffaloes lost 47-0 to Hamlin last Friday. That loss made them 6-3 on the year and 2-2 in district. They have wins over Menard 6-0, Ranger 59-6, TLCA 40-0, Plains 21-7, and in district Haskell 19-14 and Baird 25-6. They have lost to Christoval 27-26, and in district to Albany 18-10 and Hamlin 47-0. They are led on offense by quarterback Caleb Hernandez and running back Ty Tipton and on defense by DB Theron Allen and linebacker Tipton.

Kickoff in Cross Plains is at 7:00pm.

WEATHER REPORT: BEAUTIFUL FALL WEATHER

Friday's sunset. (Photo by Eden Baker)
There was no rain for a change this past week as the Roscoe area enjoyed beautiful sunny weather and some much-needed drying out after the wettest October ever. Roscoe weatherman Kenny Landfried reported an official total of 13.83 inches for the month, not as much as the 14.1” that Dan Baize got in south Roscoe, but more than enough to break the old record by more than 3½ inches. That would be the 10.21” that fell in October of 1986, previously the most since official records for Roscoe began in 1936. And, when October’s rainfall is added to the two to five-inch rains that fell in the area the last week of September, it’s no surprise to see the local lakes as full as they are.

Along with the sunny days and clear evenings, the temperatures were warmer than they had been. Thursday was still cool with a high of 56°F, but Friday warmed up to 70°, Saturday to 68°, Sunday to 62°, Monday to 77°, and yesterday also to 77°. Winds were moderate, and evenings were also mild, with lows in the forties and low fifties. The beautiful weather has been a welcome change.

Unfortunately, that is about to end as a norther that moved in last night will cool things off and bring a good chance for more rain. Today’s forecast is for cloudy skies and a high of only 54°. There is a 20% chance of rain this afternoon, but that will increase to 50% tonight and tomorrow and go up to 60% tomorrow night. Tomorrow’s high will be around 52°, cooling off to 36° tomorrow night. Friday’s high will be similar at 51° under cloudy skies and a low of 36°, but the chance for rain will drop to 20%. Saturday will also be cool and mostly cloudy with a high of 53°, but Sunday should be nice with sunny skies and a high of 62°. However, another cold front is forecast for Sunday night, bringing with it a 40% chance of precipitation and possibly the first fall freeze with showers and maybe even snow.
