City Council Hears Bandera Residents, Conducts Business

Police Chief Felix Pantoja addresses the Council at yesterday's meeting.
At its monthly meeting in City Hall yesterday evening, the Roscoe City Council heard from Bandera residents who are trying to alleviate their flooding problems, got reports on the City’s public works and the monthly Police report, heard a request to consider relinquishing an existing right of way, and approved a City Christmas Parade.

Joe Smith, who spoke for the Bandera group, said the meeting between representatives of the City, County, State, and the Bandera residents had gone well. He hopes for a positive outcome and asked the Council to provide any help that it could.

City Manager Cody Thompson was unable to attend yesterday’s meeting, so City employee and Water Works Manager Joe Vick gave the monthly public works update. He said that a crew is currently conducting some necessary camera inspection of the City’s sanitary sewer lines and that work on the pavilion in Windmill Park is nearing completion. Preparations for putting up the Christmas lights in Old Town Park across from City Hall are underway, as is the building of protective housing for a sewer machine at the City Shop. He also said filling in sinkholes from the recent heavy rains continues in certain alleys.

Police Chief Felix Pantoja gave the police report for November, saying the Department answered 91 calls, handled three vehicle crashes, issued 11 citations plus 3 dog violation citations, made 2 arrests, and dealt with 2 burglaries.

Doug Dipple requested that the Council consider relinquishing an existing right of way at Ninth and Hickory Streets, where through streets no longer exist. City Attorney Zollie Steakley explained the procedure that must be followed for a relinquishment to be legal. Landowners next to the right of way must first be notified by letter of the request, followed by a public hearing to allow for any objections.

The Council then approved Police Chief Pantoja’s request for a Christmas Parade down Broadway this Saturday starting with the lineup at 2:00pm.

The proposed discussion with Benny Cornutt to consider options for the City website was tabled and will be placed on the agenda for next month.

KTXS-TV REPORTS ROSCOE-SWEETWATER FIRE DEPARTMENT DIFFERENCES OF OPINION

A Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department public service announcement posted on its Facebook page went viral in the Roscoe area yesterday and caused enough local attention that KTXS-TV, Abilene’s ABC affiliate, reported on it in its evening news shows yesterday.

The KTXS news clip describing the controversy can be seen by clicking here.

We sincerely hope the differences between the two departments can be ironed out smoothly and both departments continue to work together to do the great jobs in this area that they’ve been doing up to now.

WEATHER REPORT: SNOW, COOL, THEN WARM AND WINDY

The snow on Saturday morning.
The Roscoe area got its first snow of the year on Saturday morning. It wasn’t a lot, about 2”, but it was enough to cover the ground and was pretty while it lasted. By Monday, it was all gone. It was preceded by a light rain, and Roscoe weatherman Kenny Landfried recorded an official .65” total precipitation here in Roscoe, but says he got .85” at his farm northwest of town.

The weather was mild preceding the front last Wednesday and Thursday with highs of 54° and 51°, but cooler after it moved in with highs of only 39° and 34° on Friday and Saturday, and only slightly warmer on Sunday at 44°. Lows for those days were 32°, 30°, and 27°. Sunday and Monday were pleasant because the wind was very light, and yesterday was warmer with a high of 58° but with strong south breezes.

The high for this week will likely be today’s 63° because another front moves through tomorrow, dropping the high to only 44° and bringing with it a 90% chance of rain. The low will drop to 32°. On Friday, the sun should be back out and temperatures warmer with a high of 54°, followed by Saturday’s 61° and Sunday’s 60° under partly cloudy skies. So, the Christmas parade and talks with Santa in Old Town Park on Saturday afternoon should be pleasant.
